Why I Use Summer to Recharge My Batteries

Paddleboarding fun in 2024!

So, I have this thing I do in the summer because I know I'm going to want to ditch my workouts because of the nice weather... or the yard/garden work I know I'm going to do... or the walk I'm going to take later... or the fun I want to have at the beach/lake...

The "thing" is that I commit to doing just 10-20 minutes of Pilates every weekday during the summer, usually first thing in the morning.

That's it. No big thing, just a short workout and then I'm off to do other stuff.

(I actually have workouts in the Membership that are only 7- 12 minutes long!)

How did this short summer workout routine come about?

Many summers ago when my kids were little, I decided one mid-June that I wanted to make a change in how I felt and looked in my body.

Summer is usually my good time of year for me autoimmune symptom-wise (since I'm apparently solar-powered) so I came up with this idea of doing a 20 minute Pilates mat workout every morning during the week before I trucked my kids off to swim lessons.

It ended up being one the best summers of my young mom life. It only took a few weeks of that routine before I felt stronger and more confident in how my body worked. What I really noticed was how much it changed my mindset and attitude towards everything, especially the daily stresses of being a mom to 3 young boys!

But even more important was the reserve of emotional resilience that doing Pilates regularly was building in me.

Because what I didn't know then was that after that summer, my husband's 14-year old sister would get critically ill and pass away in the matter of only a few months. It was a huge and devastating loss for all of us and because I homeschooled our kids, I needed to be a rock for them and maintain a sense of stability despite how I felt inside.

Having that reserve of physical and emotional strength helped keep me sane (mostly) and allowed me to give them what they needed to process that that loss and carry on with school, activities, etc.

🙋‍♀️ Why do I share that story with you?

Because since then I have always thought of summer as a time to recharge my internal battery bank. Maybe it could be that time for you, too?

☀️ Use the the motivation that extra daylight hours and sunlight provides to help you build up your physical and emotional strength.

Putting "money" in your resilience bank now will definitely pay off later with a greater sense of self-confidence and capableness no matter what life throws at you!
