About the Method
Originally named Contrology, the Pilates Method was developed by Joseph H. Pilates in Europe in the early 1900's, and became more widely known after he immigrated to the USA and opened his first studio in New York with his wife, Clara.
The Method is an incredibly adaptive and corrective mind-body system of exercise that can be gentle, rehabilitative, or strenuous, depending on the needs of the client and may include the use of specialized apparatus invented by Pilates exclusively for use with his Method.
Joseph's work was well known in New York City's dance culture by the mid-1900's and his studio become the go-to place for dance artists and other celebrities who looked to Pilates for his amazing ability to rehabilitate clients back from injury or become stronger performers.
As the popularity of his Method grew, some of Joseph's clients became teachers themselves and opened Pilates studios in other parts of the country. By the 1970's, Pilates had spread to Hollywood where celebrities discovered it's transformative power. Within the next decade or so, the Pilates Method's reputation for getting and keeping stars and elite athletes in shape had risen to the awareness of the general public. Now millions of people all over the world practice Pilates daily!
